Abstract

The NGEE-Arctic Webcam (PTZ Camera) captures two views of seasonal transitions from its generally south-facing position on a tower located at the Barrow Environmental Observatory near Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska. Images are captured every 30 minutes and available as *.jpeg files. The camera is operated by the U.S. DOE sponsored Next Generation Ecosystem Experiments - Arctic (NGEE-Arctic) project and credit also to Larry Hinzman.

The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments: Arctic (NGEE Arctic), was a research effort to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. NGEE Arctic was supported by the Department of Energy’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research.

The NGEE Arctic project had two field research sites: 1) located within the Arctic polygonal tundra coastal region on the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) and the North Slope near Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska and 2) multiple areas on the discontinuous permafrost region of the Seward Peninsula north of Nome, Alaska.

Through observations, experiments, and synthesis with existing datasets, NGEE Arctic provided an enhanced knowledge base for multi-scale modeling and contributed to improved process representation at global pan-Arctic scales within the Department of Energy’s Earth system Model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, or E3SM), and specifically within the E3SM Land Model component (ELM).

Methodology
These images come from the first NGEE Arctic camera in the Barrow Environmental Observatory. This one camera takes photos at two different programmed directions; view 1 & view 2. The camera failed in 2015. If there is a 700px subfolder, it contains the same images but resized to 700 pixels wide. From review, sometimes both camera views are in the camera view 1 folders but no effort was made to remove. Images have exif metadata: 5 meters altitude; lat/long Latitude 71 degrees 16 minutes 45.528 seconds N by Longitude -156 degrees 35 minutes 52.83 seconds W. Converted to decimal degrees: 71.279313N, -156.598008W. This free software program (ExifTool developed by Phil Harvey) was used to embed the GPS information https://exiftool.org/TagNames/GPS.html. The photographs are grouped by year typically following this file name format: NGEE-A_BEO_cam_$YEAR_$DOY_$HH$MM-vw1.jpg; NGEE-A_BEO_cam_$YEAR_$DOY_$HH$MM-vw2.jpg. Earlier 2012 files may have this format $YEAR_$DOY__$HH$MM-vw2.jpg.
